Google is at it again. Turning the SEO world upside down. Pulling the rug out from underneath the SEO industry to keep us all on our feet! Recently, Google’s Matt Cutts let the cat out of the bag while speaking at the South by Southwest conference in Austin, Texas as reported by David Murphy of PCMag.com. What Cutts revealed is essentially that many of the long-standing SEO strategies that SEO companies have been using to help rank their clients websites well in the search engines could actually now, with the forthcoming Google change, end up hurting the website’s rankings if they’ve been overdone. This is set to roll out over the next month or so.
So why would Google do this and what does this mean for website owners?
Google is doing this to increase the quality of their search engine results. Plain and simple. The better results they deliver up the more people will use their search engine. The more people that use their search engine the more money they make on advertising through Google Adwords. It’s a business and Google’s making a profit by increasing the value of their service.
But what about the website owners? Well, there’s good news and there’s bad news.
First the good news. If you’ve used a good reputable SEO company that has emphasized quality content, legitimate inbound links from reputable websites, online social discussion and website mentions then you have little to worry about.
Now the bad news. If you’ve been employing a company that uses black-hat strategies or an SEO company or individual that overemphasizes any one particular SEO strategy over the many that exist your website rankings could take a beating.
